Community Financial Opens Two More Student Credit Unions in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools

Plymouth, MI -- (March 14, 2005) – Community Financial recently opened student-run credit unions at Central and West Middle Schools in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district. Community Financial also manages student credit unions in six of Plymouth-Canton’s elementary schools, Discovery and East Middle Schools and in the district’s three high schools.

“By offering financial education opportunities at all levels of primary and secondary education, we can help students understand how their savings grow over time and how to manage their money before entering adulthood,” said Natalie McLaughlin, Community Financial education partnership coordinator.

Central Middle School Principal Joyce Johnson welcomed students to the grand opening of the school’s student credit union in late February. Student volunteers from teacher Ann-Marie Konyha’s 8th grade Careers Class help run the student credit union in addition to the school store.

In early March, West Middle School followed with its student credit union grand opening. Assistant Principal Mark Bondy greeted 7th grade student volunteers from teacher Jeanette Mckinnie’s Life Management class. Student volunteers go through a job application and interviewing process prior to selection.

“When you see the excitement on the student’s faces and how seriously they take their new volunteer responsibilities, parents and school leaders can be very proud,” said Michelle Richards, the credit union’s business education coordinator for West Middle School.

Community Financial’s student credit union program, which now includes 23 schools throughout Michigan, teaches students the importance of saving in elementary schools, provides a way to grow their savings in middle school and then offers access to their savings and checking accounts in high school. The partnership also includes classroom presentations on financially related topics.

Headquartered in Plymouth, Mich., membership in Community Financial, is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers or attends school in the Michigan cities, townships or counties of Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, Alpena, Otsego and Montmorency. With more than 34,000 members, Community Financial provides financial services to members at seven branch locations and through a variety of automated and online services.
